Whether compatible printer ink cartridges are green or not depends on the type of compatible ink cartridges. There are two different types of compatible ink cartridges – ink tank and print head. Ink tank cartridges are commonly used ink Epson ink cartridges and they are made from brand new materials and are therefore not a green alternative to genuine OEM products. Print head cartridges which are commonly used for HP ink cartridges, Lexmark and a few Canon printers are recycled and only have a small number of new materials. These cartridges are widely known as remanufactured cartridges because they are basically empty OEM cartridges that have been stripped down cleaned and then refilled with ink. The only new materials used in the remanufacturing process are the ink that it is refilled with, the internal sponges and the packing all the other materials such as the casing and the print head are reused. What makes these cartridges environmentally friendly is the fact that if they are being reused and if they weren’t they would simply end up in the landfill.
